Tips to Become More Likable in Your Workplace

Everyone wants to be liked, especially by your coworkers or boss. After all, your job is a huge part of your life and you associate with your coworkers more often than your friends and family during the weekday. So it makes sense that any employee would want to be liked at their jobs by their bosses and coworkers. Here are some tips that can help you become more likeable in your workplace.

Smile more

A smile can go a long way, especially in the workplace. When you see other employees or pass by them in the office, make sure to always acknowledge them with a smile. Nobody ever likes the brooding, unhappy coworker.

Have meaningful conversations

Try to strike conversations with co-workers about meaningful stories and topics. Likeable people ask about other people’s passions and what their interests are, as well as their families, friends, and work.

Ask questions

Don’t be afraid to ask questions about others, like how they are doing, what they think about something, and how you can help. If you see someone struggling with work, ask if they need help, or try to lighten their mood. Asking questions shows that you care, and people always like a person that they know is there for them.

Be inclusive

People that are widely liked throughout the office are generally the people that include everyone no matter where they are or what they are doing. They always find a way to include others who may seem a little out of place or in need of a friend. Whether it be at lunch or a coffee break, little things like an invite to join can make a huge difference.

Know when to speak

There will always be those few people in the office that will talk and talk, just for the sake of hearing themselves speak. If you want to be liked in the office, don’t be that type of person. Likeable workers always know when it is appropriate to talk and give their opinions, either during conversations or meetings.

Offer small acts of kindness

Random small acts of kindness will really make a positive difference in your workplace. Try bringing snacks into the office every once in a while or offering to grab coffee in the morning for whoever wants. Replace the printer paper when you notice it’s empty or wash some extra dirty dishes in the kitchen sink. Little 5 minute favors for coworkers may not be such a big deal to you but could mean the world to others.

Be emotionally intelligent

Be aware of your own emotions, and also be sensitive to others. These are qualities that make people in the workplace so likeable.

Offer good advice

Offer more than just “dont worry” when a coworker is sad or struggling with something work related or personal. It is important to bring meaningful advice to the situation, and let them know you are there to help.
